Flying is so yesterday. If you want to avoid expensive taxis and getting perved on by the new airport security checks, then trains are the only way to get around. Whether you’re looking to large it in Latvia or get kinky in Helsinki, Traincation expert Hollie Wicks bring you the the weird and wonderful of European Traincations…
This week we are sending you to the picturesque surroundings of Portugal for a cycling adventure….
What’s all the fuss?
Headwater is a company that organises cycling and walking holidays (which we love obviously). It offers many beautiful routes in various countries but we’ve picked Portugal as our favourite. The cycling tours are uncovered genuine hidden treasure routes that will lead you through the rural regions of tiny white villages and wheat fields. The population of the area nowadays is rather small so you will find the coast and countryside all to yourself.
The cycling holiday begins inland with three nights in their stylish hotel which is situated in between the fragrant meadows of white rockrose. Two days will be spent discovering rugged castles, natural beautiful beaches and the fishing villages near Vila Nova de Milfontes, before heading down south for the final nights on the coast of steep bays, which includes cycling along river valleys to meet the ocean.
The accommodation is a home from home, with enthusiastic English speaking owners who welcome you in with open arms, just like “staying with friends!” The hotels are rural properties that have been transformed into boutique hotels for you to stay at for the best cycling holiday. Check the website for your pick of hotels and get on yer bike!
Travelling to Portugal by train is pretty easy. So relax, and enjoy the most sophisticated way to reach Portugal. First take the Eurostar from London to Paris, and why not stop for a famous croissant or pain au chocolat while you’re there? Then catch the high speed TGV from Pairs to Irun (Spanish frontier) before hopping on the ‘Sud Express’ overnight to Lisbon. This comfy train has a restaurant and bar, so enjoy a meal and drink on your way over before retiring in the spacious sleeping cars. Before you know it you’re in Lisbon to catch a quick local train to your accommodation. Enjoy your cycling adventure! Visit Loco2 or RailEurope for tickets and help with booking.
