Because going on an adventure doesn’t have to cost the Earth…
By Jack Sullivan
When people hear the phrase “eco-friendly travelling”, many automatically imagine people camping in jungles and getting around on foot. That is of course certainly (extremely) green travelling, and hats off to anyone who actually does it, but you don’t have to abandon home comforts to be an eco-traveler. All that’s necessary is an attempt to protect the planet by slightly altering some of your travelling practices.
So, to help you do this, we’ve compiled a list of our top tips to get you travelling in (green)style…
Do It In Public
If you’re going into the local town, an extra 15 minutes on a bus will do wonders for the world. If you’re backpacking and are wanting to get to the other end of the country, get a train instead of an internal flight – after all, that’s what real backpacking is!
Stay in eco-hotels
They’re just as nice, if not nicer, than your bog standard hotel, and are much better for Mother Earth – it’s a win win. Check out our collection of the ultimate green resorts from all over the globe!
When you leave your hotel room, turn off the air-conditioning and all electrical devices. As well as this, keep your showers as short as possible and don’t leave water running when you’re brushing your teeth – you do this at home to save money on bills, so do it whilst abroad to save the planet!
Buy local products as much as you can instead of things that have been shipped in from overseas. You’ll be helping to boost local economy AND protect the planet by minimising transport emission for the goods – twice as many Global Cool points!
Last but by no means least, carry a reusable drinking container. Plastic bottles tend to travel thousands of miles before you buy them, so their impact on the Earth is still quite bad, despite the fact they can be recycled! This can also save you a ton of water when you’re out and about.
So there you have it – our top tips for planet-cooler travel. You can still have as good a time, so why not help those around you and the world we all share whilst you do it.
And to finish off, here’s a video of an African take on Rihanna‘s smash hit We Found Love just because. Happy travelling!
Here comes the science bit…
