Who needs indoor heating when you can have super-insulated clothing instead?

Because keeping warm and saving money doesn’t have to cost the Earth…

Self Insulating Clothing

Apparently 47% of the global energy we use is spent on indoor heating (!) and of that 42% is solely for heating our houses. With energy prices constantly on the rise, that’s a lot of pennies down the drain!

So you can imagine our delight when we heard that a team of researchers at Stanford University published a paper on AgNW-coated textiles and a new strategy called “personal thermal management”, which aims to heat people rather than houses.

According to Professor Yi Cui, and PhD student Po-Chun Hsu & co, if you dip clothing in a solution of metallic nanowires, like AgNW, you can reflect 90% of your body heat back at yourself. When compared to an uber thick wool sweater, which only reflects back 20% of body heat, that’s pretty darn impressive. It would also feel almost the same as normal clothing, as only a tiny amount of AgNW solution is required to keep you warm.

It’s an incredible idea for Turning Up The Style and Turning Down The Heat, but we’re not sure how we’d feel about peeling off those layers for a shower in a freezing house!

GC articles show you one of four ways (the one in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
Do it in public (ditching the plane/car)/
