Finnair flies to New York partly fuelled by recycled cooking oil

Because going on long haul adventures doesn’t have to cost the Earth…

Finnair Uses Cooking Oil Fuel

Those in the know are turning to trains for all their short haul travel needs, especially now airport check-ins have become peep shows for overworked security guards.

But we know that sometimes people have no option than to hop on a gas-guzzling jet from A to B. Which is why we were super pleased to hear that a Finnish airline ran a flight to New York earlier this month using recycled cooking oil!

Finnair said the biofuel mixture that powered the plane is partly made from oil used by restaurants – cool!

The airline has been testing more planet-friendly fuels since 2011 but says the cooking oil concoction is “not yet economically viable for any airline to operate with exclusively”. We’re not there yet but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. And kudos to Finnair for taking that first step!
