Because being part of the urban sprawl doesn’t have to cost the Earth…
Global Cool popped along to Siemens’ new eco-building The Crystal last week and we have to admit, we had a pretty awesome time.
The Crystal sets the bar for sustainable building design and technology, and also houses the world’s largest exhibition on the future of cities, with some pretty high-tech computer systems and gadgets (think Minority Report screens minus Tom Cruise).
There’s an array of different sections hosting everything from electric motorbikes and an indoor waterfall to two state-of-the-art film theatres, plus a whole host of fun games.
Our favourite bits were the Tesla coil (below left) in the Go Electric area where we used our arms to generate wind power (hard work but so fun), and the awesome Batman-esque electric motorbike (below right), which we just had to try on for size.
The tour ends with a spectacular video showing the solutions of the future of urbanisation – including rotating solar spires, urban rooftop farms, face recognition to pay your train fare and some very awesome electric cars.
The project is backed by Boris Johnson, who said: “The futuristic Crystal is a fantastic new landmark for London which has breathed life into the Royal Docks. It continues the rebirth of East London witnessed by the world this summer and I am determined to ensure this regeneration continues.”
We’ve loved all the positive vibes that have come out of the Olympics this summer so we couldn’t agree more!
The Crystal exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10–5. It’s free for under 18s and residents of Newham, so make sure you get along there soon!
Here comes the science bit…
