Spring Cleaning

Our latest guest post is from Ellie Good of EggMag. Enjoy…

Given the fact that I’m due to have a baby in May, I thought I’d better try to bring out this nesting urge I hear is supposed to rear its squeaky clean head during pregnancy. Thus far, I have not had such a feeling. The only cravings I have experienced are for lasagna, which can inevitably leave a mess if spilled in the kitchen. Which I do. Often. So then I am back at square one. With lasagna stains on my wooden worktops, wondering when this urge to clean will arrive.

Luckily, this website I run is all about trying not to be a planet-basher. And as it covers all sorts, I thought I’d use it as an excuse to force my hands to grip bottle and sponge and boldly give my place a ruddy good Spring clean.

It’s never that straight-forward though, and the question is, when cleaning products are such a cause for debate, how does a punter know which one to use?

Over the last 20-30 years these brightly coloured solutions and potions have been linked with the rise of allergies, asthma, skin conditions and superbugs and are contributing to the build up of unnatural chemicals that we now all carry around in our bodies. There have even been links made with certain cleaning products and breast cancer. The human reaction to chemical build up, as yet, has no solid scientific evidence, but all these links suggest that by the time the results are in, it may be too late.

It’s not just us that need to worry about these nasties either. Many petroleum-derived surfactants don’t just slip away. They hang around, sometimes mutating into something worse in our water systems turning our rivers, lakes and seas into a giant synthetic cordial and leaving rather a nasty taste in the gills of those poor fish. And all for the sake of a shiny sink. Read on…
