Did you know that a shocking 6,508 people were homeless at some point in London in 2013? It’s heart-breaking to say the least, but there are always people out there who will do something to help…

Lava Mae is a project set-up by San Franisco resident Doniece Sandoval. Its aim is simple – to ‘deliver dignity one shower at a time’, i.e. provide people who don’t have access to showers with the opportunity to have one.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) were kind enough to donate an un-used 1993 mini bus to Doniece, which she then converted into a mobile shower unit. It’s equipped with two shower suites, each containing a shower, toilet, sink and hair dyer. Now that’s some pretty awesome upcycling if you ask us!

In an exclusive interview, Doniece revealed that she challenged herself to go a week without showering not only to “raise visibility”, but also to “kind of step in, in a very small way, to the shoes of the people that we would be serving.”

People worldwide have contacted Doniece about introducing similar mobile shower facilities in their own cities, and we’d love to see it come to the UK.
