Becoming a vegetarian or vegan is one of the best things you can do for the planet but what if (like quite a few of us at Global Cool Headquarters) you’re not ready to ditch meat completely? Never fear, you can still do your bit for the planet (and make yourself healthier and richer) by incorporating Meat Free Mondays into your life.

Starting next week, Global Cool’s newest feature Meat Free Mondays will bring you the crème de la crème of vegetarian recipes to encourage you to ditch meat just one night a week. And here’s why you should join in…

It’ll make you healthier and happier
In 2010, a study carried out by Oxford University found that eating meat no more than three times a week could prevent 31,000 deaths from heart disease, 9,000 deaths from cancer and 5,000 deaths from stroke (pretty impressive eh?) It really is a fantastic way to slim down that waistline too (healthy vegetarian meals tend to have a lower calorific content than meat alternatives). And you can feel a bit happier too knowing that you’re saving a piglet or two.

It’ll save you money
Meat meals are on average more expensive than the veggie version so cutting back will help out your bank balance. The average UK family spends £13.10 a week on meat and fish, with £3.70 and £3 being spent on fresh vegetables and fresh fruit respectively. The cost of meat has risen a lot over the past few years, so opt for veggie alternatives to ease the strain on your pocket.

It’ll be kinder to the planet
We wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t mention just how beneficial this incredibly small lifestyle change is to the planet. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the livestock sector is currently “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems”. So take the Meat Free Monday challenge with us and live a healthier, happier and richer life!
