Because doing what you love doesn’t have to cost the Earth…

VELECOAs such avid bike lovers and fans of ethical fashion, it was only a matter of time before we had a chat with Jonathan Lewis of VELECO. The successful co-founder of this ethical cyclewear company could rival us for our cycling crown and he told us more about what they do… “We are the world’s first Fair Trade and eco-friendly cyclewear company. Our aim is to offer cyclists an ethical and eco alternative for guilt free riding.”

And like many of our Dream Jobs stars, the idea wasn’t born in a stuffy boardroom but rather over a pint (something Global Cool can definitely get on board with): “My business partner Jamie Lloyd  met up in a pub in Brighton to discuss what we might do, after a few pints we discovered that we both loved cycling.

So we decided to see what eco and ethical cyclewear there was out there. After doing some research Jamie and I concluded that there wasn’t anything out there that we classed as truly ethical cyclewear. After a few more brainstorming sessions in the pub VELECO was born.”

John knows how important being green is and he told us “It’s obvious I know but without the planet we’ve got nothing, so what could be more important than looking after it?” We couldn’t agree more! VELECO are helping to green up the world with their awesome line including the VELECO Re:Cycle Softshell Cycling Jacket made from recycled polyester from 12 plastic bottles. John told us more…

“We use organic, natural and recycled materials wherever possible in our range. Many of our cycling organic cotton t-shirts and hoodies feature eco inspired designs which we hope will get cyclists thinking about green issues. Our promotional material is always made from eco-friendly materials. We obviously cycle into work and use bike trailers around Brighton as much as possible, even our website runs on an Eco Web Hosting server.” Very cool indeed!

You should definitely keep your eye on this exciting new brand as John revealed “We plan to launch more eco and ethical technical bikewear in the next 12 months including cycling shorts, trousers, more jackets, luggage all using eco and organic materials and blends. We also have some secret projects that we’re very excited about. Hopefully in the next five years there’ll be VELECO stockists and cyclists across the world and we’ll be known for making cycling even more eco.”

If you’re on the brink of launching your own business, make it green and definitely heed VELECO’s advice: “Go for it, identify that need, do your research, do your figures, and keep going when people say no.” And to find out more about VELECO and to view their range visit www.veleco.cc, or check out this video now…

GC articles show you one of four ways (the one in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
Do it in public (not the car/plane) /
