Beat The Winter Blues

Are you having a bad day? Weather getting you down? Yearning for a bit of summer sunshine? Why not try out some of these tips to cheer yourself up…

WindowLighten up
We know that dragging yourself out of bed in the morning can be a nightmare. You keep hitting that snooze button until you have to leap out of bed in a crazed hurry and rush into the office. It really is no way to start your day and the elevated stress levels so early in the morning are not good for you. Get up a few minutes earlier, open those curtains and embrace the day. Natural light is much better for waking you up (rather than dreary light bulbs) so make sure you lighten up!

CuddleHave a hug
It doesn’t matter how grown up you are, it’s hard to resist a good cuddle. I big hug actually boosts the natural feel-good endorphins in your body which can reduce stress and make you feel happier. Find someone to have a cuddle with – your partner/roomate/cat/postman – and get the good feeling flowing!

ExerciseSweat it out
We know you’ve probably heard it all before but it’s a scientific fact that the endorphins released during exercise can boost your mood. So get up, get out and get active. Don’t waste away in a dark, energy-guzzling gym! Whether you make the effort to go for a run in the morning or just hop off your bus a stop early, it’s time to get physical outside.

Write a listList
Sometimes when that black cloud descends it can be hard to remember that you have any positive things in your life. When you start to feel like this it’s time to pull out the pen and paper (recycled, natch) and write a list of all the things you have to be grateful for. Maybe you have an amazing sibling, or a friend who never fails to make you laugh or you’re incredibly skilled at tap dancing. Whatever you have in your life, jot them down and even if they seem small, having all the little things in one big happy list is sure to make you smile.

And if all else fails there’s one sure fire way to make you feel better… Even if you don’t feel like it, smile. Force yourself to grin for as long as you possibly can and you’ll feel instantly happier. And who knows, maybe your manic smile will brighten up someone else’s day too…
