Because looking great this summer doesn’t have to cost the Earth…
With the summer fast approaching, we’re starting to panic a bit about peeling off the layers and revealing our (less than toned) bikini/speedo bodies. If you’re feeling the same way, check out these five small (and surprising) changes you can make that will have you stripping off in no time (oo-er)…
Don’t join a gym
That’s probably not something you’d expect to see in a get fit article, right? Well, several studies have compared treadmill running at the gym to running in the fresh air outside with unexpected findings. The results of these studies generally showed that outdoor running burns more calories and is more effective than indoor. So ditch that gym membership (all those machines were draining the planet anyway) and embrace the great outdoors!
Fill your body with the good stuff and make sure you’re eating a balanced diet of healthy and organic food. Don’t skip meals and don’t fill yourself with nasty chemicals from processed foods either. You might think that grinding yourself into the ground at the gym and not refuelling will help you lose weight, but it will do more harm than good in the long run. In fact, some foods can burn more calories than a trip to the gym (yes, we know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s true). Scientists have discovered that organic seaweed enriched bread can burn 178kcal per serving which equates to more than a 30 minute gym workout. So put down those dumbbells and have a snack instead.
Be less “social”
We know you’ve heard this so many times before but giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. Whether you’re a 20-a-day person or a “social smoker”, what you’re doing is harming your body, the planet and costing you a whole load of cash. Smoking also means that your workout will be less effective as you’ll be out of breath much quicker. So just quit. Full stop.
Don’t go veggie
Unless you really want to of course! But if you’re not ready for such a big leap then a good first step is incorporating meat-free Mondays into your life! It really is a fantastic way to slim down that waistline (healthy vegetarian meals tend to have a lower calorific content than meat alternatives). You can also save some money too as meat meals are on average more expensive than the veggie version.
Enjoy going to work
Ditch the car and walk or cycle to work if you can. It’s so simple to do, saves you money and helps you lose weight. If it’s not a feasible option for you in terms of your commute why not try to split the journey? Get off the bus a few stops early, or walk to the train station instead of driving.
Here comes the science bit…
GC articles show you a few ways (the ones in bold) to live greener…
