Following the burrito rush of 2013, 2014 has to be all about the burger. Cities have exploded with burger joints popping up left right and centre. I say why the hell not! I mean what other meal provides all the food groups in a soft, fluffy brioche bun? Exactly! So here’s a little love for the BEST veggie burger in London…

Stepping out of Gipsy Hill station, straight away I notice the large windowed, softly lit bar opposite me – Beer Rebellion. The staff are friendly and down right stylish. I hear Muddy Waters playing over the sound system and I take a seat upstairs, where I can watch the chefs do their thing.

This place is relaxed and full of character, the staff are welcoming, the beer is exquisite and the food incredible. Whether you’re looking for somewhere for a cosy date in the reading room, a gathering of friends in the granny flat or a working lunch in the brew room – this place is a must see.

The Food  The Vegebello Burger
If you’re tired of being offered beans as your main staple of vegetarian burger then you’re in for a treat. Beer Rebellion’s Vegebello is a hurricane of flavour. Brioche bun, Portobello mushroom marinated in ginger and garlic, topped with halloumi… OH MAN!

The mushroom is juicy, it’s earthy taste fusing beautifully with the sweet and fiery ginger/garlic combination. Then the salty contrast of the halloumi brings it all together.

Forget the fries – the staff recommended their Beerkins (Beer Battered Gherkins) and they are oh so right. Salty, soft gherkins encapsulated in a crispy golden shell – I never want to see a fried potato again! Price: £6 for Burger and £3.50 for Beerkins.

Beer RebellionThe Drink – Late Knights: Morning Glory (Best Bitter)
The bar staff know their beer! Beer Rebellion serve their own brews and great picks from several other breweries nearby. I asked them to match a drink to the burger and they directed me to the Morning Glory.

And after a boyish laugh at the name, I was sold. The sweet caramelly toasted malt flavours from the ale cut right through the saltiness of the burger. BEAUTIFUL! Price: £3.50 a pint.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 For a craft beer bar without the pretentiousness but with a whole load of character, great beer, warm staff and the BEST veggie burger in London pop over to Beer Rebellion, Gipsy Hill. Check out the full menu below…

If you’re not ready to ditch meat completely from your diet then a good first step is incorporating Meat Free Mondays into your life!
