There’s been a lot of talk surrounding the new iPhone 5 this week, and not all of it has been great. We were disappointed to find out that the new iPhone is significantly less green than the old model – in fact it has a 73% higher carbon footprint than its trusty predecessor.

And to make matters even worse the new iOS 6 version of the iPhone has got rid of Google Maps and put Apple maps in its place. No longer will you have access to those awesome public transport instructions on Maps at the touch of a button.

We’ll be steering clear of purchasing a new one, but if, like us, you’ve already gone and blooming installed the iOS 6 update on your old phone here are some decent public transport apps too to find your way around…

Train Times UK – OK, we know it costs £4.99 but this app really is the bees knees of rail travel. Keep up to date with the latest info, check accurate ticket prices and even keep an eye on live arrivals.

The Trainline – This app is slightly less accurate for live information but it’s great for finding the best rail discounts. You can even buy train tickets up to ten minutes before you travel. And it’s free. Winner.

Tube Map – Probably the most downloaded and used Tube map app on the App Store. It’s crammed full of features. From finding a station, planning a journey, Oyster card balances to so much more. And it won’t cost you a dime.

London Bus Checker – This app is well worth the measley £1.99 cost. You can instantly see when your bus is due with real-time information. It covers 20,000 bus stops and provides full route maps so see where your bus goes and check your stop. There’s even a Stop Alert that will wake you up when you get to your bus stop!

And if you’re outside of London there are loads of different bus and train apps to choose from – just check iTunes!

GC articles show you one of four ways (the one in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
/ Do it in public (not the car/plane) /
