Movie Review: St Vincent

Welcome to our feature Green Screen, written by our film fanatic Hollie Wicks. Each month we’ll be bringing you the scoop on the best movies to spend your pennies on and which cinema flops to avoid.  All we ask in return is that you do your best to take public transport if you’re going to the cinema. Who knows, you might even meet Forrest Gump at the bus stop…

I thought I would give Melissa McCarthy another chance, and watch St Vincent, and I’m glad I did!

Melissa McCarthy stars in St Vincent as a recently single young mother trying to provide a good life for her young son through working long hours as a nurse. One day her son, Oliver (played by Jaeden Lieberher) finds himself without his phone or keys after being harassed by the school bully. But he soon finds solace in an unlikely man, his neighbour, Vincent (played by Bill Murray).

Vincent is an old Vietnam veteran, who wallows in his stubbornly self indulgent ways which have left him without money or a future. However things soon change for him when Oliver shouts across the front garden. From the lonely life he leads with just a woman of the night as company, this unexpected friendship fills his days with new challenges. He begins begrudgingly looking after him, but soon learns to enjoy it and teaches Oliver street survival, ways to beat the bully and household chores to earn his keep.

Verdict:

I rate this film a fair 6 out of 10, it was one of those feel good movies that warm your heart. One to put on the list for a rainy duvet day…

GC articles show you one of four ways (the one in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
/ Do it in public (take the bus to the cinema instead of driving) /
