By Callan De Villiers

We have been overwhelmed these past few weeks with powerful, awe-inspiring talent. This weeks picks are no exception, hailing from the states, these two New York based artists (and best friends) found themselves in a small flat in Brick Lane performing to a small group of spellbound individuals.

First up was one of the most interesting, jovial, articulate woman we’ve ever met. Amy Leon is a singer, songwriter, poet, actor, and spoken word artist from Harlem, NYC. She has storied to tell, real stories, raw stories, and delivers them in a way that is powerful and intimidating but also absolutely beautiful. Having recently graduating from NYUs Tisch School of Arts, studying abroad in our fair city of London and playing several venues across both capitals, Amy Leon can also add self-publishing a collection of poetry, titled The Water Under The Bridge to her resume. She is so invested in her work – her art – and has the ability to share experiences of love, rage, passion, and healing. Ones to not miss are Assemble and Learning This Skin. Our pick for this week is Chasing….

And just when we thought the night couldn’t get any better, Kiah Victoria performed. This artist is exceptional. Simply exceptional. Her sound is a combination of several genres – R&B, electro-soul, and a bit of pop – but is essentially focused on vocals. Her voice is effortless, raw, sweet-as-honey, and we could not get enough. Imagine a female Jack Garratt/Shura/Corinne Bailey Rae and you have a glimpse of the powerhouse that is Kiah Victoria.

She starred in The Lion King on Broadway when she was only 10, performed on the Voice, attended Tisch and has gigged at some of NYC’s world renown venues. Not to mention featuring in JAY Z’s short film, Picasso Baby. Take a look at her latest EP Gravitate, and don’t miss the title track Aurora or her cover of Coldplay’s Fix You on SoundCloud. Our favourite pick is her track Breathing Is Too Easy. Take a listen below…
