Bike babe Shay Mitchell vs. eco phoney George Clooney

Because living like a celebrity doesn’t have to cost the Earth…

Shay Mitchell and George Clooney

We love to keep up to date with everything that’s going down in celebsville. So to keep you in the loop too, each week we’ll be picking a green A-lister who will become a venerated Eco Saint and an environmentally-discourteous super star to be branded with the title of Eco Sinner. This week, it’s judgement day for Shay Mitchell and George Clooney…

Eco Saint: Shay Mitchell
When Earth Day rolled around on April 22, many people were still in the midst of their post-Easter chocolate fog (Cadbury is a cruel mistress), so I was rather surprised at the number of people who broke out of the Hershey haze long enough to celebrate the beauty and splendor of our wonderful planet. And while it was a given that A-list environmentalists like Ian Somerhalder and Leonardo DiCaprio would mark the 44-year-old event, it was nice to see some fresh faces, like Pretty Little Liars actress and newest Eco Saint inductee Shay Mitchell showing Mother Earth some much-needed love.

The exotic beauty tweeted an Earth Day reminder to all of her fans: “ Celebrate #earthday today and everyday! It’s the only one we have! “

The Divine Ms. Shay also attached a pic of herself sitting pretty on her bicycle, the Canadian cutie’s preferred mode of ‘green’ transportation. Lest people think Shay was just posing with a bike as some sort of a public relations stunt, I can assure you that she really does love plunking her well-toned derriere on a bicycle saddle. Anyone who follows Teen Vogue’s premier cover girl on Twitter knows that the woman is an avid cyclist.

Opting to tool about on her two-wheeler rather than cruise the streets in one of those ubiquitous So-Cal Range Rovers, Shay is demonstrating a sense of eco-consciousness and also a level of modesty rarely seen in members of the Young Hollywood Scene, many of whom seem to have embraced a ‘go big or go home’ mentality.

I just really hope and pray that Shay’s planet-friendly practices rub off on her flashier famous friends.

Eco sinner: George Clooney
Right about now, I’ll bet a lot of you are thinking that I made a careless mistake up above: “She obviously meant to make the grey-haired and dapper defender of God’s green Earth an Eco Saint. Maybe she’s just tired and confused”, you’ll say. “A hardcore environmental activist like George Clooney would NEVER commit an eco offense.”

However, celebrities like Mr. Clooney find it too easy to put their sustainable lifestyles aside when it comes to pursuing personal pleasures and pastimes that have clearly negative environmental implications. George, for example, counts motorcycling as one of his favorite recreational activities, and does not seem the least bit interested in permanently parking all of his Harleys, even if the planet would benefit from the selfless gesture. Maybe celeb eco-activists just think it’s their prerogative to have a little fun at Mother Earth’s expense, for all the good they do for it (and, it’s MY prerogative to have a little fun at THEIR expense).

Motorcycles tend not to have the cleanest burning engines, so we’re talking about some serious pollutants being hurled into our atmosphere every time he pumps down on his mid-life crisis machine. Is it that hard to find a hobby that doesn’t spew toxins into our stratosphere? Really George, is it?

I’m sure your new fiancé (still feels weird to say) would much prefer a quiet, romantic date involving the two of you riding vintage bikes down a nature trail, to an evening spent with her face buried deep into your shoulder, praying to the heavens above for protection, speeding down Interstate-5 in your mighty hog!

What this says to me is that George is dedicated to saving our great blue marble, but only in so far as ‘going green’ involves no REAL sacrifices on his part. I’m a little disappointed in you, Cloonster. All I’m asking is that you practice what you preach.

frankensteinHere comes the science bit…

GC articles show you a few ways (the ones in bold) to live greener…

/ Be a winner (not a binner) /
/ Turn up the style (not the heat) /
/ Love the trend (not the spend) /
/ Do it in public (not the car/plane) /
