Because living like a celebrity doesn’t have to cost the Earth…
We love to keep up to date with everything that’s going down in celebsville. So to keep you in the loop too, each week we’ll be picking a green A-lister who will become a venerated Eco Saint and an environmentally-discourteous super star to be branded with the title of Eco Sinner. This week, it’s judgement day for Nikki Reed and Usher…

Eco Saint: Nikki Reed
This week, thanks to singer/songwriter Nikki Reed, those of you with a passion for music and animals scored big time when the multi-talented artist made the magnanimous decision to donate a percentage of the proceeds from her latest single, Fly With You, to a spectacular wildlife refuge facility in southern California. That’s correct! By purchasing Nikki’s terrific track on iTunes, you’ll be doing your part to support animal conservation in a meaningful way. Don’t you love it when a celebrity makes altruism so darned easy? Ms. Reed’s unparalleled commitment to protecting all creatures great and small has more than earned the vivacious vocalist the distinction of being named this week’s Global Cool Eco Saint!
Anyone who follows Nikki Reed on Twitter knows that the stunning songstress is an avid advocate for the rights of animals. Not a day goes by without Ms. Reed informing her followers about the plight of some four-legged friend who needs a forever home, or linking them to activist groups dedicated to preventing the extinction of Earth’s most vulnerable species at the hands of one Homo Not-so-Sapiens. So, I wasn’t entirely surprised to hear that Ian Somerhalder‘s GF is selflessly giving a portion of the recording sales to the Wildlife Waystation, an animal shelter that provides care to nearly 80,000 critters in desperate need of rehabilitation.
The Waystation is a nonprofit organisation, and therefore relies solely on the generosity of others to stay in business. But, with the sheer numbers of people downloading Nikki’s phenomenal new song (myself included), I think this animal sanctuary will remain up and running for years to come!
So, whether you purchase Fly With You because you want to help Wildlife Waystation keep its doors open or because the song itself is super boss (which it totally is), just go to iTunes and download Nikki’s stellar jam. I promise you won’t regret it!
Eco Sinner: Usher
Gee, another pop super star whose sense of entitlement has extended to encompass any and everything in sight. Why, that never happens! Does it? *sarcastic eye roll8. Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry…the list of pop Sinners goes on. Such unique talents, but all with the same eco-back story: mansions, the private Leer jets, and ginormous cars that get less than a tenth of a mile to the gallon! Were it not for the folks on Billboard’s Top 100, I’m afraid this column wouldn’t survive.
This week, it’s R&B legend, Usher who’s earned two green thumbs down from yours truly for driving an automobile that could quite possibly be larger than my first apartment. Sorry, Usher. Even your dimply smile and impressive abs can’t sway me from naming you Global Cool’s newest Eco Sinner!
It seems Usher wanted to make a statement when he ran his weekend errands in Beverly Hills, so the Yeah singer opted to cruise down Wilshire Blvd in a custom-made Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Usher probably felt like quite the big dog riding around in his sky-blue abomination of an SUV, but trust me, his monster truck only served to highlight the musician’s diminutive stature. Are the streets of California’s most prestigious zip code so treacherous that you absolutely must drive a pavement-mangling, gas-guzzling sports utility vehicle?
One final point: Usher, as the Biebs’ discoverer and mentor, you have a powerful influence over one of the most egregious eco-offenders in Global Cool history. So, how about the next fancy footwork you teach the J-dog is how to get in step with the planet and reduce that clumsy carbon footprint of his. Perhaps take the Tesla out for a leisurely spin INSTEAD of that giant blue army tank! Who knows what kind of effect greening up your lifestyle will have on Justin!
And for the wellbeing of your very own children, please put the brakes on the Wrangler!
Here comes the science bit…
