Because living like a celebrity doesn’t have to cost the Earth…
We love to keep up to date with everything that’s going down in celebsville. So to keep you in the loop too, each week we’ll be picking a green A-lister who will become a venerated Eco Saint and an environmentally-discourteous super star to be branded with the title of Eco Sinner. This week, it’s judgement day for Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Reese Witherspoon…

Eco Saint: Mark-Paul Gosselaar
Like many girls in their early twenties (if you’re gonna lie, lie big I always say), my first crush was on a certain precocious teenage boy with frosted blonde hair, a devilish smile, and a mobile phone only slightly smaller than a shoebox. That’s right. I’m referring to the star of Saved By The Bell and of my own teenage daydreams, Mr. Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
‘Zack Morris’ is all grown up now, with a successful career as an actor and with cute little ‘Gosselaarings’ of his own. Just this past weekend, Mark-Paul brought them to the California coastline where they joined in picking up the flotsam and jetsam of our consumerist culture to make the shore so fresh and so clean, clean. The only thing I love more than an environmentally conscious celebrity is one who makes certain that they pass that eco-gene on down to their own children. So congrats, Mark-Paul Gosselaar! You have just been named Global Cool’s newest Eco Saint!
Mark-Paul and his kiddies, Michael, Ava, and Dekker sacrificed precious weekend time to assist Heal the Bay, a nonprofit organisation that fights to keep coastal waters healthy and pollutant-free. Even Dekker, Mark-Paul’s tow-headed one-year old was willing to get his itty-bitty hands sandy for such a great cause:
THIS, my friends, is what it’s all about. Getting future generations, the ones who will reap whatever WE have sown, involved in restoring Mother Earth to her former glory. Who better than the fit and fabulous Franklin & Bash actor, one-time child star, and now fantastic father, to do this by teaching his children at a young and tender age to stand up and fight for a cleaner and greener tomorrow!
Eco Sinner: Reese Witherspoon
Let’s face it. The vast majority of our most celebrated superstars aren’t exactly MENSA members. So, when most A-listers commit an eco-offense, I naturally just assume that sheer ignorance is the explanation for their faux pas. But not all celebrities are so blissfully dumb as to be blind to the effects that private planes, mega-mansions and gas-guzzling SUVS are having on the environment. America’s favorite southern belle, Reese Witherspoon, is easily one of the most intelligent and educated actresses in Hollywood. So do you really expect me to believe that the Academy award winner is as clueless as ‘Elle Woods’ about the holes being punched in the ozone by her behemoth-sized Land Rover? I didn’t think so. Reese, for using your high IQ to make the really dumb choice to carouse about town in a petrol-pounding SUV, I’m naming you Global Cool’s newest Eco Sinner.
I had almost completely forgotten about Reese’s love of sports utility vehicles until very recently when the paps snapped photos of a meter maid ticketing her larger-than-life Land Ruiner for parking in a no celebrity zone (kidding).
I know that not everyone is able to emulate eco-heroine Naomi Watts in pedaling her family around in a multi-seated bicycle. That takes a special kind of passion for the planet (not to mention calves of tempered steel). But, c’mon Reese, couldn’t you at the very least trade that SUV in for something slightly smaller? Maybe an automobile that doesn’t require almost as much gasoline as a school bus?
Many young women look up to Ms. Witherspoon, and for good reason. She’s a top-tier thespian, a brilliant businesswoman, and a devoted mother. Reese, the only thing keeping you from being the absolute PERFECT role model is your choice of car! So, let that Rover go and pick-up that Prius today!
Here comes the science bit…
