No ball: David Cameron’s celeb friends are batting for the wrong team

David Cameron recently asked cricket and Strictly Come Dancing star Darren Gough to run for parliament in Barnsley. Asking local hero Goughy to stand for the Conservatives was a pretty cynical attempt to curry favour in the Yorkshire constituency, which is hardly a Tory strong hold, having been held by Labour since 1983.

But here at Global Cool, we can’t help thinking that if D-Cam (as no-one, thankfully, is calling him) wants to go down the road of improving his street cred with celebrity associations, why not opt for the green route instead? This is, after all, the self-proclaimed “greenest government ever”.

Sadly, Goughy hardly fits the green bill. He was once quoted as saying: “I think I’ll cut back down to two cars”.

Here are five better celebrity friends for the PM…

Stella McCartney
This British designer is an animal rights campaigner, vegetarian, eco-friendly car driver, designer of animal-friendly fashion line and co-creater of Meat Free Mondays to lower carbon emissions. Stella can’t do enough for her planet, making her a perfect candidate for a “greener” MP.

Guy Ritchie
Guy Ritchie once applied for permission to change his Wiltshire mansion into an eco-friendly estate where he could be totally self-sufficient and grow his own fruit and vegetables. He is also an enthusiastic supporter of cycling and is frequently spotted biking around London. Sounds to us like Guy and Boris Johnson could be fast friends.

Liz Hurley
Liz started a 400 acre organic farm five years ago in Gloucestershire, growing her own crops such as wheat and oats. She collaborated with Prince Charles to launch a range of organic snack bars as part of his organic food line,Duchy Originals. Liz even produces healthy beef jerky from her own cattle on the farm. We think she deserves to be MP for her great environmental ideas… and she’s not bad to look at either.

Tim Minchin
Tim Minchin would be a great candidate as he often addresses social taboos in his comedy songs, such as Prejudice. He has even written a song called Canvas Bags, encouraging people to use fewer plastic bags and take their canvas bags instead when going shopping. Innovative ideas and a good sing-a-long could be just what the Tories need.

Myleene Klass
Myleene proves she’s not just a pretty face (or a bikini body) by teaming up with Team Green Britain to create a video of tips on greener living. The latest campaign suggests ways people can save money and the environment. Check out how she gives green a touch of Klass here
